Poster for the theater play “The Tempest” by Shakespeare, for Compagnie Casalibus. Using elements from the play, the poster features a folded paper boat (as the ship and/or the crown) a frog (as the captain and/or the victim), hanging on on a painted backdrop (the tempest and/or the island). The sophisticated typography composition contributes to the general feel of washed out organized chaos.
The plot: King Alonso of Naples and his entourage sail home for Italy after attending his daughter’s wedding in Tunis, Africa when they encounter a violent storm. Everyone jumps overboard and is washed ashore on a strange island inhabited by the magician Prospero who has deliberately conjured up the storm. Prospero and Miranda live in a cave on the island which is also inhabited by Ariel, a sprite who carries out the bidding of Prospero, and the ugly, half human Caliban.
The themes illustrated in the play are freedom, friendship, repentance and forgiveness, among a lot of magic and tragic enchantments.
